Last-Minute Pairing Turns Into Asian Games Gold as Suruchi Singh and Kamaljeet Set New Record

Sometimes a late change creates the biggest opportunity.

India’s Suruchi Singh and Kamaljeet delivered one of the standout performances of the 2026 Asian Games on Friday, winning the 10m air pistol mixed team gold medal in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

What makes the victory particularly interesting is how the partnership came together. The Indian combination was reportedly changed at the last minute, but the new pairing responded by topping qualification and then producing an Asian-record performance in the final.

For India, it was not simply another medal. It became the country’s second gold medal of the Games and its first shooting gold at Aichi-Nagoya 2026.

Suruchi Singh and Kamaljeet Dominate Qualification

The warning signs for their rivals appeared before the medal round even began.

Suruchi and Kamaljeet topped qualification with 587-29x, recording series scores of 196, 195 and 196.

That performance put India in first place heading into the final and demonstrated remarkable consistency across the qualification stage.

But the pair still had to convert that strong start into a medal when the pressure increased.

They did considerably more than that.

Asian Record Falls in the Final

India finished the final with 484.6 points, establishing an Asian record on the way to gold.

South Korea finished second with 478.0, while Iran secured bronze with 415.8.

The gap between India and South Korea was therefore 6.6 points, giving Suruchi and Kamaljeet a convincing margin at the top of the podium.

The result transformed an unexpectedly assembled partnership into one of India’s biggest moments of the Games so far.

A Last-Minute Decision That Changed India’s Morning

The story behind the medal makes the result more unusual.

According to reporting from Nagoya, India’s mixed-team combination underwent a late change before the event, bringing Suruchi and Kamaljeet together.

Late changes can be difficult in a precision sport.

Mixed-team shooting requires two athletes to perform individually while their scores contribute toward the same result. There is little room for a poor series when medals can be decided by extremely small margins.

Instead of being disrupted by the change, the Indian pair immediately produced elite-level scores.

They topped qualification and followed it with a record-breaking final.

Who Is Suruchi Singh?

Suruchi has emerged as an important name in India’s new generation of pistol shooters.

At Aichi-Nagoya, the mixed-team competition gave her an opportunity to convert individual shooting ability into a team medal.

Her performance alongside Kamaljeet showed another important quality: the ability to adapt quickly to a newly formed combination and still perform under medal-round pressure.

For young shooters, that ability can become particularly valuable at major multi-sport competitions where schedules, team combinations and conditions can change quickly.

Kamaljeet Delivers Under Pressure

Kamaljeet’s role was equally important.

Mixed-team shooting does not allow one athlete to carry the entire combination. Both shooters need to repeatedly produce competitive scores.

The qualification total of 587-29x demonstrated that the Indian partnership was not relying on one exceptional shot or one strong series.

Their consistency continued when the medal was at stake.

By the end of the final, the scoreboard showed India ahead of two established Asian shooting nations—South Korea and Iran.

Shooting Becomes India’s Big Story on Day 6

The mixed-team gold was not India’s only shooting success on September 25.

Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Rudrankksh Patil and Niraj Kumar also won silver in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions team event.

The Indian trio scored 1762-94x, finishing behind China’s 1766-95x. South Korea took bronze with 1751-87x.

That meant India collected gold and silver from shooting during the morning session, giving the country’s medal tally an immediate boost.

India’s Asian Games Medal Tally Reaches 19

Following the shooting results, India’s tally reached 19 medals: two gold, eight silver and nine bronze.

Shooting alone had contributed nine medals at that stage of the competition.

That contribution makes the shooting contingent one of the most important parts of India’s campaign so far.

More events remain, meaning those numbers can change quickly as competition continues.

Why This Gold Stands Out

Medal tables tell only part of a sporting story.

Suruchi and Kamaljeet’s victory contains several elements that make it particularly memorable:

They were brought together following a late change.

They immediately topped qualification.

They then produced an Asian-record score when the gold medal was on the line.

And the result delivered India’s first shooting gold of the Games.

That progression makes the performance more interesting than the final medal colour alone.

India Has More Medals Within Reach

India’s September 25 campaign is far from finished.

The men’s and women’s kabaddi teams have progressed to their respective finals, guaranteeing India at least two medals, while Indian athletes have also secured podium positions in table tennis and squash events.

That means the medal tally reported during the morning session should be treated as a snapshot rather than India’s final total for the day.

For Suruchi Singh and Kamaljeet, however, their part of the day’s story is already complete:

a late team change, a dominant qualification performance, an Asian record and an Asian Games gold medal.
