Gold and Silver Prices Today: Can Indian Buyers Get a Better Deal Before Diwali?
Gold and silver prices have weakened ahead of India’s festive buying season. For families planning jewellery, coins or silver gifts, lower rates could reduce the cost of purchases already on their shopping list.
However, a further fall before Diwali is possible, not certain. International prices, interest-rate expectations, the rupee and local premiums can all influence what Indian buyers eventually pay.
Dhanteras falls on November 6, followed by Diwali on November 8, 2026. These are important occasions for precious-metal purchases, but festive demand alone does not determine prices.
Gold and Silver Prices in India Today
The following indicative consumer rates were displayed by Goodreturns when checked on October 23.
| Metal and purity | Unit | Indicative price | Change from previous day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24K gold | 10 grams | ₹1,42,480 | Down ₹1,900 |
| 22K gold | 10 grams | ₹1,30,600 | Down ₹1,750 |
| 18K gold | 10 grams | ₹1,06,860 | Down ₹1,430 |
| Silver | 100 grams | ₹22,000 | Down ₹500 |
| Silver | 1 kilogram | ₹2,20,000 | Down ₹5,000 |
These are published reference prices, not guaranteed shop quotations. Gold rates exclude GST and other applicable levies. Jewellery making charges and product premiums can increase the final bill.
Why Does IBJA Show Different Prices?
The IBJA website displayed the following AM benchmark rates when checked:
| Metal and purity | Unit | IBJA AM benchmark |
|---|---|---|
| Gold 999 | 10 grams | ₹1,41,448 |
| Gold 916 | 10 grams | ₹1,29,566 |
| Silver 999 | 1 kilogram | ₹1,95,027 |
IBJA states that its rates exclude 3% GST and making charges. Its PM column was still blank at the time of checking.
Benchmark bullion prices, indicative retail listings and actual shop offers are different price series. Update times, product premiums and dealer pricing can create gaps.
The silver difference is particularly large in these listings. Buyers should therefore obtain a written quotation for the same purity, weight and product type before comparing offers. Neither a benchmark nor an online retail listing guarantees the price available locally.
Why Are Gold and Silver Prices Falling?
Higher Yields and a Stronger Dollar
Recent international trading has put pressure on precious metals. Dow Jones reporting published by The Wall Street Journal linked the October 22 decline to stronger dollar conditions, elevated Treasury yields and concerns about inflation.
Gold does not pay interest. When interest-bearing assets become more attractive, some investors reduce their demand for it. Silver also faces pressure when markets become concerned about manufacturing demand.
Silver Supply Is Another Factor in India
Reuters reported on October 22 that India had issued permits for around 6,500 tonnes of silver imports over six months, citing bullion dealers.
The report said additional supply could reduce domestic premiums, although stronger Indian imports could support global prices. Dealers reported that local premiums had already narrowed.
For shoppers, this means the extra amount charged above the underlying silver price deserves attention. A smaller premium can improve a purchase quotation even when the international price changes little.
Could Prices Fall Further Before Diwali?
Yes, but the next move depends on several competing forces. The scenarios below explain possible directions; they are not price targets.
| Development | Possible effect on Indian prices |
|---|---|
| International bullion prices decline further | Could lower domestic metal costs |
| US yields and the dollar remain strong | Could keep pressure on global gold |
| The rupee strengthens against the dollar | Could make imported bullion cheaper |
| The rupee weakens | Could offset part of an international price decline |
| Local silver supply improves | Could reduce dealer premiums |
| Festive buying strengthens | Could support local premiums |
| Investors seek safety during market stress | Could trigger a gold rebound |
The rupee is especially important. An international fall does not always produce an equal percentage reduction in India. Exchange-rate movements can absorb part of that benefit.
Similarly, geopolitical uncertainty can pull gold in different directions. It may encourage safe-haven buying, while higher energy costs can also reinforce concerns about inflation and interest rates.
The practical outlook is two-sided: further weakness could improve buying opportunities, but waiting until the festival does not guarantee a cheaper purchase.
Does Diwali Buying Always Push Gold Prices Higher?
Dhanteras and Diwali are major buying occasions. However, describing them as a guaranteed annual price peak would be misleading.
Demand also depends on affordability. The World Gold Council reported that Indian jewellery demand in the second quarter of 2026 fell 15% year on year by volume, even though it improved from the previous quarter. Total spending on gold rose sharply over the year.
This distinction matters. Consumers can spend more money while purchasing fewer grams.
Festive demand may support prices locally, but it can still be outweighed by a global decline. Families may also choose lighter jewellery, smaller coins or lower-cost gifts when prices stretch their budgets.
How Much Could Buyers Save?
Using the day-on-day changes in the indicative retail table, the potential reduction in metal cost is:
| Planned purchase | Illustrative reduction |
|---|---|
| 5 grams of 22K gold | ₹875 |
| 10 grams of 22K gold | ₹1,750 |
| 20 grams of 22K gold | ₹3,500 |
| 100 grams of silver | ₹500 |
| 500 grams of silver | ₹2,500 |
| 1 kilogram of silver | ₹5,000 |
Calculations use the published daily changes above. They exclude taxes, making charges, stones and product premiums. Actual savings depend on the seller passing through the lower rate.
For someone with a fixed purchase requirement, the immediate benefit is a smaller bill. For someone with a fixed budget, the benefit may be more metal for the same spending limit.
Neither benefit should be confused with a guaranteed investment profit.
Making Charges Can Matter as Much as the Gold Rate
Consider a hypothetical jewellery purchase with a metal value of ₹1,30,000.
If one shop charges 12% for making and another charges 8%, the difference is ₹5,200 before taxes, assuming the jewellery is otherwise comparable.
That difference is larger than the ₹1,750 daily decline shown for 10 grams of 22K gold in the reference table.
This is why a “discount on making charges” should be assessed against the final amount payable. A large advertised discount may still leave a higher bill if the starting charge is expensive.
Ask for a breakdown showing:
- Net precious-metal weight and purity.
- Metal rate used in the calculation.
- Making charges and any wastage charge.
- Stone weight and price, where applicable.
- Taxes and the final payable amount.
- Exchange or buyback deductions.

Should Festive Buyers Purchase Now or Wait?
For a purchase needed by Dhanteras or Diwali, a useful approach is to set a budget and compare complete quotations now. This creates a clear reference against which to judge later offers.
Buying separate planned items on different dates can spread timing risk. However, repeated delivery fees or product premiums may reduce the benefit. It is also less practical for one indivisible jewellery piece.
If a jeweller offers a price-booking scheme, check the written terms. Find out whether a later fall is passed on, whether the deposit is refundable and which charges remain variable.
Buyers exchanging old jewellery should compare the net top-up amount. Falling gold prices can reduce the price of the new item, but they can also reduce the exchange value of the old gold.
For investment purchases, the decision requires a different lens: holding period, diversification, costs and the ability to tolerate losses. A festive purchase date does not establish an attractive investment valuation.
What Buyers Should Watch Next
Before paying, compare the latest bullion benchmark with the seller’s quotation. Check whether lower metal prices have been passed through and whether premiums have changed.
Further declines could benefit Diwali shoppers. But negotiating charges, checking purity and staying within a planned budget are steps buyers can control today. Predicting the exact lowest price is not.
